TWO ROMAN POTTERY PILGRIM FLASKS
2nd - 3rd Century A. D.
The larger flask moulded on each side of the circular body with a Murmillo and Provacator gladiator in combat, flanked by birds, within a laurel wreath border, repaired with restoration, 29.2 cm high; the other similar, depicting Retiarius and Secutor gladiators, one with the victor's palm branch between them and a trident below, on the reverse they are transposed, repaired, 21.3 cm high; and a Roman green glass flask with tall body and knop base, a single applied trail around a flaring rim, twin strap handles, circa 3rd Century A. D., 21.6 cm high. Provenance: Item one: acquired 1987 Cologne.
